The travel picture itself is solid and slowly improving. What complicates it is something no passport ranking captures: since March 2024, Kuwait has stripped citizenship from more than 50,000 people, and that campaign matters more to some readers than any single visa rule on this page.

The quick answer

Kuwait's passport ranks 48th globally on the 2026 Henley Passport Index, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 96 destinations. That's third in the Gulf, behind only the UAE and Qatar, both of which have pulled well ahead in recent years. Within the GCC itself, Kuwaiti citizens travel on an ID card alone, no passport, no visa, no border formality worth mentioning.

Europe is the one place that still asks for real paperwork. The Schengen area requires a visa, though a favourable arrangement since 2023 means most applicants now get a five year multiple-entry visa on their first try. The UAE and Qatar have both secured full Schengen exemptions in the past decade; Kuwait's own exemption has been "under negotiation" since at least 2016 and still hasn't been finalised. The UK, by contrast, only asks for a light Electronic Travel Authorisation, not a full visa, and has done since 2016. The US still wants a genuine B1/B2 visa, since Kuwait, unlike Qatar, isn't in the American Visa Waiver Program.

Free movement across the Gulf

This is the easiest travel a Kuwaiti passport does. Europe still means a visa, just an easier one lately

The Schengen area has required a visa from Kuwaiti citizens for as long as most travellers can remember, and that hasn't changed. What has changed is how painful the process is once you clear it. The Americas and the rest of the map

The United States still requires a full B1/B2 visa from Kuwaiti citizens, with an in-person interview and no electronic shortcut. Kuwait was never brought into the US Visa Waiver Program, and Qatar becoming the first Gulf country to join it, in December 2024, only made the contrast sharper. There's a reciprocal irony here too: American citizens visiting Kuwait get a visa issued on arrival at the border, no application, no embassy, while Kuwaitis heading the other way still need the full process. Elsewhere, the picture is friendlier. Turkey, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Jordan, Lebanon, Armenia, Georgia, and Kazakhstan are all visa-free for Kuwaiti passport holders, for periods ranging from 30 to 180 days. China currently waives its visa too, part of a temporary arrangement extended through the end of 2026, and Uzbekistan opened up in June 2025.

Why "Kuwaiti citizen" isn't as stable a category as it sounds

Every other section on this page assumes the passport in your hand is secure. For a growing number of people, that assumption doesn't hold, and it's worth being direct about why.

Since March 2024, Kuwait's government has run an intensifying campaign to revoke citizenship from people it says obtained it fraudulently, hold undisclosed dual nationality, or fall under other grounds in the Nationality Law. The campaign began shortly after the Emir dissolved the National Assembly and suspended parts of the constitution in May 2024, which let the government amend nationality rules by decree rather than through parliament. By some counts the total had passed 50,000 by mid-2026, roughly 3 percent of Kuwait's citizen population, and a new decree published in April 2026 tightened the rules further, including provisions affecting women naturalised through marriage. For the destinations that do require paperwork, here's the order that actually works.

• Confirm your passport and nationality status are current before booking anything abroad. Given the scale of the ongoing revocation campaign, this is worth checking even if you have no specific reason to expect a problem.
• Apply for the Schengen visa well ahead of travel. Even under the more favourable cascade rules, processing still takes weeks, and a five year visa is worth the extra lead time to get right the first time.
• Get the UK ETA before you book flights, not after. It's a light process, but airlines will refuse boarding without it, the same as a missing visa would.
• Start the US B1/B2 process early and expect an interview. There's no ESTA shortcut for Kuwait, and appointment availability varies by season.
• Don't assume "on track for Schengen exemption" news means the change is live. Check the EU's own published visa policy for Kuwait immediately before booking, not a news article from a prior year.
• Carry your ID card, not just your passport, for Gulf travel. It's genuinely all you need within the GCC, and it saves you from handling your passport unnecessarily.
